It is a strict tradition that before visiting Lord Ram at the Janmabhoomi, one must first pay obeisance to Lord Hanuman here to seek his permission. Lord Ram entrusted the safety of Ayodhya to Hanuman Ji, making him the 'Kotwal' (Guardian) of the city.

Hanuman Garhi is a fortress-like temple located on a mound in the center of the city. To reach the main shrine, devotees have to climb 76 steep steps. The main idol depicts Mata Anjani holding Bal Hanuman (Child Hanuman) in her lap. It is one of the most important landmarks in Ayodhya.

The temple is believed to have been established in the 10th century. The current fortress-structure was built by the Nawabs of Awadh who respected the shrine and granted land for it.

The temple is built like a fort with four bastions at the corners. The walls are thick and high, designed to protect the deity. The sanctum is embellished with silver carvings.
